Practice of Egami Karate-do

The method of practicing should be made according to each dojo's individual histories and traditions. However, useful aspects of other dojos should also be considered when comparing their practices to our own.

I will list the normal procedure of Karate-do practice at Fujitsu Yutenkai dojo for reference.
( There are several photos of Oita Yuten-kan and Housei-Giwa-Domon-Kai people.)

 Cleaning the Dojo
Dojo is a solemn place, so we have to clean the dojo before anything.
(movement using the hip. It's good for Shi-Kou, (knee-walking))

 Warming up
Anyway, let's try to relax. To stretch the body without tense.
We aim for making the flexible body from inside, like a water bag.
(Makko Shikei. It's good for lung and breath training.)

 Seiza
To sit with a straight back in a clean atmosphere with a clean conscience and meditate in silence. This is very basic posision of Karate-do. Move while always keeping the relaxed posture of the upper body in Seiza posision.

 Kihon (Basic)
Need to practice to make the relaxed body that is same way as Jyu-nan taisou (Warming up).
At first, the beginner learns the Hachi-Ji-Dachi to understand how to stand without tension, to make the natural stance. To relax and try to go down your every waight to foot. And, to find out your center axis.

After that, we train Karate's basic standing, Kiba-Dachi, Fudo-Dachi, Zenkutsu-Dachi, Kokutsu-Dachi, and so on, to make the flexible body and stable hip. Then, we train Karate techniques, Fist, Swaord Foot, Sword Hand, Elbow, Knee, Head, all parts of the body can be used as a weapon. Use every stiff edge of the body. Clenching a fist. Circulate vital energy. It's necessary to relax joints except those which are used as a weapon.

For example, to punch with a clenched fist while loosening the shoulder and elbow muscles. Loosen the tension. Martial art is throwing one's weight to enemy.

Kumite (Sparring, but it's not fighting)
This is not Ran-dori or Jiyu-Kumite that means free sparring. At first, we decide who is a receiver and who is a counter partner to do Kumite. Sometimes we call this style of kumite is "Yakusoku-ippon-Kumite". We practice to learn how to use Karate blocking techniques, Jyo-dan-uke, Ge-dan-barai, Uchi-uke and so on. Blocking technique is a combination of the part of the body. Through the Kumite, we are able to learn the relationship with a counter partner and understand own situation of body & mind.

Kata
We practice sixteen Karate-do Kata’s which were enacted by Master Egami. Beginners learn Taikyoku-Sho-dan at first because its order is very simple. (But it is called the most difficult Kata) Karate-do Kata contains every important things, techniques, usage of body, to express one's mind or personality from within. So, we aim to express our status made by our constant effort of training.
